FAQs
Chamberlain retail models - maximum door height of 10 feet
Chamberlain residential garage door openers (excluding Wall Mount) meet the industry standard to operate a 7 feet high garage door. If a garage door is higher than 7 feet, depending on your type of system, a chain or belt drive extension kit will be necessary to operate your garage door. Refer to the parts page in your product manual to order the correct extension kit.
If a garage door height exceeds 10 feet, please contact your local professional garage door installer. Garage doors higher than 10 feet are generally considered semi-commercial, these types of doors can include doors for workshops or RV's.
Does my garage door opener require any monthly or annual maintenance?
Your garage door opener will perform best and last the longest if you take time to service your garage door. A simple door balance check once a month will ensure your door is not causing stress to the opener, and annual lubrication of the door and opener will ensure the smoothest operation possible. Follow this standard maintenance schedule to obtain the longest possible life from your Chamberlain garage door opener.

Once a Month
Test the balance and alignment of the door
- With the door closed, disconnect the garage door from the garage door opener, by pulling the red manual release rope straight down and then back toward the motor unit. With the door disconnected from the opener you should be able to open and close the door easily with one hand. The door should be lightweight and operate smoothly in both the up and down direction. If the door sticks or binds the door is out of alignment and will need to be serviced by a professional.
- Open the door half way and then release the door. The door should remain in place completely supported by the springs. If the door begins to fall towards the floor or starts to rise upwards, the door is out of balance and will need to be serviced by a professional.
Test the Safety Reversal System
- With the door fully open, place a one-inch board (or a 2x4 laid flat) on the floor, centered under the garage door.
- Operate the door in the down direction. The door must reverse upon striking the obstruction. If the door stops on the obstruction, it is not traveling far enough in the down direction. Increase the DOWN limit (located on the side of the overhead motor unit) by turning the DOWN limit adjustment screw counterclockwise (opposite of arrow) 1/4 turn. (For openers with programmable travel limits, see
- Repeat the test.
- On a sectional door, make sure limit adjustments do not force the door arm beyond a straight up and down position.
- When the door reverses on the one-inch board (or a 2x4 laid flat), remove the obstruction and run the opener through 3 or 4 complete travel cycles to test adjustment.
- If the door will not reverse after repeated adjustment attempts, call for professional garage door service.
- Repeat this test once a month and adjust as needed.
Do I need to reinforce my garage door?
Before installing your garage door opener, you must first check for proper vertical and horizontal support. Horizontal and vertical reinforcements are required to prevent damage to steel, aluminum, fiberglass, or glass-paneled doors. Some doors that are considered double-sided have reinforcement built into the interior of the door, when in doubt it is always best to add additional reinforcement.
Angle iron is commonly used for both types of reinforcement. Install a horizontal brace along the full width of the door, near the top. A vertical brace should extend the height of the top panel. If possible, attach the braces to each other for more support. Garage door reinforcement kits may be available through a dealer or hardware store. Check your owner's manual for more detailed instructions.
How to get inside the garage if my garage door is not responding to my remotes and/or keypad
If the garage door opener is not responding to your remote controls and/or keypad (and you don't have the outside quick release model1702LM, 7702C or 7702CB installed), there is unfortunately no way to activate the opener. If you have no other access into the garage other than through the garage door, you will need to gain access some other way. Our LiftMaster dealers/installers may have experience in this area.
